Most of these ceramic pieces are filled with improbable plants, some with several different species sprouting out of one stem. In many cases, the plants become animated, and seem to have conversations with one another. They have personalities: some are big and pushy, some are delicate and quiet, while others are prickly. Lisa Houck is interested in creating a world of color and pattern, with compositions that are complex enough to suggest something new each time you view the artwork.

Houck's work in ceramics ranges from large, wheel-thrown plates to cast tiles which are carved in a style which is reminiscent of her printmaking. She also makes painted functional pottery.
